Research & development of best practices in Asset Management decision-making
The European MACRO Project (EU1148) was a 3-year, £1.3 Million program of investment in the tools and methods for making optimal maintenance decisions for physical assets. Leading European companies collaborated to research, develop and document best practices for risk-based justification and timing optimisation for maintenance. The results combined innovations in methods for quantification, monetization and range- estimating of risks, deterioration, asset performance, sustainability and 'intangible' impacts. In particular it showed how to handling decisions with complex trade-offs and when available data is limited or highly uncertain.

The international SALVO Project was a cross-sector collaboration programme, researching and developing best practices in optimal decision-making across all types of asset management decision. It was a 4-year project (from 2009-2013) that explored, experimented, developed and documented the process steps, educational needs and technical solutions to optimise over 40 different decision types typically encountered during the asset life cycle. These combine the best existing practices with human psychology, practical business processes and advanced analytics. The SALVO Project was runner-up in the 2013 IET Innovation Award, a worldwide search for the best of creative talent and significant new developments.

The SALVO Process is the end-to-end methodology for optimal decision-making developed by the SALVO consortium. It identifies six fundamental steps, comprising a ‘top-down’ targeting of the most important and valuable issues and opportunities to be addressed, and a ‘bottom-up’ evaluation, justification, optimal timing and program integration of the most appropriate actions or solutions.
The six steps are illustrated in the
“SALVO Smiley” diagram.
Full process guidance, training and decision support tools were developed and are available for each of these steps.
